I write about the history of buildings and landscapes. An early fascination with megalithic monuments inspired me to study archaeology at Cardiff University. Since then I have branched out to a wider range of interests, including church architecture (I come from Somerset, a county with a very rich ecclesiastical heritage), industrial history (I lived and worked for many years in South Wales), and more recently river histories (I live beside Britain’s longest river). I wrote my PhD thesis at Birmingham University on the history of ironmaking in Shropshire.
My writing has been published in the academic and popular press, including contributions to British Archaeology, BBC History Magazine and History Today. To date I am the author of 22 books, most of which have a significant photographic input. A selection of journal articles, and unpublished reports that are now in the public domain, can be read at https://independent.academia.edu/RichardHayman
My photography pursues the same interests as my writing – buildings, landscapes, and more often buildings in landscapes. Back in the day I took photographs for print media, via picture agencies, but that is no longer a viable business model and so I use photography to illustrate my own books and for commissioned architectural work.
